The Success Principles by Jack Canfield

‘Since its publication a decade ago, Jack Canfield’s practical and inspiring guide has helped thousands of people transform themselves for success. Now, he has revised and updated his essential guidebook to reflect our changing times.

In The Success Principles, the co-creator of the phenomenal bestselling Chicken Soup for the Soul series, helps you get from where you are to where you want to be, teaching you how to increase your confidence, tackle daily challenges, live with passion and purpose, and realise all your ambitions.

Filled with memorable and inspiring stories of CEO’s, world-class athletes, celebrities, and everyday people, it spells out the 64 timeless principles used by successful men and women throughout history–proven principles and strategies that can be adapted for your own life, whether you want to be the best salesperson in your company, become a leading architect, score top grades in school, lose weight, buy your dream home, make millions, or just get back in the job market.

Taken together and practised every day, these principles will change your life beyond your wildest dreams.’

I sometimes feel I’m slightly biased towards this book. Why? Because it was the book that started my personal development journey. A bit like the first car you ever owned or the first class you ever taught, it’s got a special place in my heart.

But that’s not particularly helpful to the average Josephine wondering whether to buy it, is it?

I’d heard of the Chicken Soup for the Soul series from an episode of Friends, but I didn’t really know what it was all about back then. Jack Canfield was the co-creator of that series and was also part of the film/book, The Secret.

His book, The Success Principles, came into my life just when I needed it the most. In a job I found stressful, I felt like I needed some guidance on what the heck to do with my life! And for me, guidance came in the form of this book.

Okay, yes, it references the Law of Attraction. It talks about affirmations and visualisation. Some of you might not be keen on that ‘woohoo-ery’, but don’t be put off by it! Jack carefully explains just why these things matter and why they are part of his success principles. It’s not all woohoo-based either. There’s a good deal of strategy in here too.

He also uses stories from everyday people to illustrate his points.

But don’t be under the illusion that these principles are easy. Don’t be thinking you can visualise some stuff and all of a sudden you’re the next Oprah, Brene or Beyonce. Not likely, sister!

What you’ve got to understand is that, as Jack says, ‘the principles work if you work the principles.’ Consistency is key. It’s not a quick fix. It’s about change from within.

What I really love about it is that it encourages you and guides you on how to change yourself first. Once you’ve worked hard to make yourself feel more confident, once you’ve developed the right mindset, only then can you begin to transform the other areas of your life too.

Read it, take from it what works for you and change will happen – but remember! It only works if you work the principles!
